Glenhest Sports Ground
Glenhest has one of the best all-weather pitches in the county. It caters for Athletics, Soccer and Gaelic Football. It is the home pitch for Glenhest Rovers, the local soccer team. Lahardane McHale’s, the parish GAA club us the pitch as well. The ground is in the care of Glenhest Community Council.
This area and ground was used down through the years for many sporting events such as horse racing. The Mayo News of August 13th 1912 reports a horse race being held there. Much of the sand was removed and it became overgrown with whins and shrubs. Fr. Gerry Gillespie and Glenhest Community Council restored it. 3 acres of it was fenced and seeded, in 1976. There was a grand opening on May 15th 1977. The Mayo team put on a display of gaelic football that day.
The sports ground is situated in one of the most scenic areas of Mayo, along the northern side of Beltra Lough where the Crumpaun river flows into the lake.
